Established in 1998 by Michael and Shelly McGowan, Michael’s Seafood Restaurant has garnered accolades from both locals and visitors for over a decade. After the passing of Michael McGowan in October 2012, his demise was mourned by family, friends, loyal customers, and the wider community. Despite battling Cystic Fibrosis and undergoing a lung transplant, Michael refused to let his physical setbacks hinder his spirit. Noteworthy for his advocacy within the Cystic Fibrosis community, Michael alongside his dedicated wife Shelly poured their hearts into their family and establishment, Michael’s Seafood Restaurant. Serving as integral members of Pleasure Island, their contributions have enriched the local community significantly.
While many recognized Michael for his culinary prowess and prize-winning seafood chowder, his endearing qualities extended far beyond the kitchen. A devoted husband, father, and son, he demonstrated unwavering commitment to community service by sponsoring sports teams, fundraising for local schools via spirit nights, organizing charitable events like the annual Shrimp Open Golf Tournament in aid of Cystic Fibrosis Foundation and Duke Lung Transplant Program. Known for greeting patrons with warmth and a genuine desire to enhance their dining experience, Michael’s selflessness permeated every aspect of his life – professionally, medically, and personally.
Shelly is dedicated to upholding Michael’s esteemed legacy by overseeing the continued operation of Michael’s Seafood Restaurant and realizing their shared vision of the Big Apple Bakery in a manner befitting his memory.
